The safety of all the 24 Hours of Freedom athletes is one of our top priorities. In addition to having our own safety staff, all local law enforcement and ems organizations will be alerted to the event. In the event of any injury or illness which could be life-threatening please call 911 immediately. Additionally, mobile numbers for event staff will be provided to team captains on race day.
Safety Requirements:
Both vehicles must each have a wireless phone to ensure communication in any type of emergency. Teams are required to present both phones during check-in.
- Both runner vehicles must display a "CAUTION! Runners on Road" sign. This sign may be hand-drawn, but must be clearly visible to traffic through the window. Teams without signs in their vehicles may be assessed a time penalty or be disqualified from the race. Teams are required to present both signs during check-in or acknowledge that signs are present on their vehicles.
- From 5:00 p.m. on Friday until 7:00 a.m. on Saturday all athletes MUST wear a reflective vest and carry a working flashlight/headlamp that is on. Any athlete seen during these hours without the above equipment (or in working order) may be disqualified by ANY event staff or assessed a time penalty. Please be safe. Teams are required to present 2 Vests and 2 headlamps during check-in.
All runners must be carrying a map of the leg they are currently running while on the race course.
- All teams must have two medical kits -- one in Vehicle A and one in Vehicle B. Teams are required to present both kits during check-in.
In case of any life-threatening emergency, please follow these steps:
- Dial 911. Please be sure to be as detailed as possible when describing your location
- Contact race management and explain the emergency situation. Please let them know if you have contacted 911 and follow any emergency instructions of the race management.
- NOTE: The phone number for the Race Managers will be given to all team captains at the registration table on race day.
INJURED ATHLETES:
If an athlete is alone and hurt on the race course, please wait on the side of the course for a safety crew member to pass. The safety crew will continually be circling the route to ensure all athletes are in good condition. If, while waiting, another athlete passes, please let them know you are injured and ask them to tell the volunteers at the next exchange point. All volunteers at each exchange point will have communication with the Safety Crew. Safety crews will "sweep" the entire course, ensuring that all athletes safely complete all sections of the race.
SAFETY NOTE TO ALL ATHLETES:
PLEASE ALWAYS USE EXTREME CAUTION during the entire race. The roads and trails along the course will NOT be closed or restricted. In addition, several of the Exchange Points are along roads with high traffic. All athletes and teammates must be very aware of vehicle traffic at all times. ALWAYS RUN AGAINST THE FLOW OF ON-COMING TRAFFIC UNLESS INSTRUCTED OTHERWISE!
