Rules & Requirements
- 24 Hours of Freedom
Arizona's Premier Team Relay Race
|
 |
The Race Director reserves the right to add, modify or cancel any of these rules at any time.
Captains: Please ensure that your entire team (including athletes, volunteers, drivers and other support personnel) understands these rules.
RACE
- Race Management reserves the right to add and/or change any rules and requirements at any time. Changes and additions will only be made with participant safety in mind.
- All registration fees and donations MUST be received on or before race day. If fees are not received, teams will NOT be allowed to run.
- All athletes must be registered and listed in running order in the proper data field in the online database by EOD March 15th 2009. There will be a $15 fine for each change made after this date. Athletes and running order will be confirmed by team captains at the check-in table on race day. Changes after the deadline must be emailed to the race staff at goforit@24hoursoffreedom.com.
- All waivers must be signed and returned to the 24 Hours of Freedom Relay prior to or on race day, in order to participate in the race. Missing waivers = no run, no fun.
- Any participant under the age of sixteen must be accompanied by an adult pacer while running their legs and may participate ONLY after gaining approval to do so from Race Management.
VOLUNTEERS (Volunteer Information)
- All teams with at least one member living within 100 miles of the course, MUST provide one volunteer to work on race day at an Exchange Point or other assignment. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Volunteers must be registered in the online database by EOD March 15th 2009.
- Please remember that volunteers are vital to the success of the relay!
TEAMS
Every team MUST HAVE THE REQUIRED TEAM EQUIPMENT to participate on race day. NOTE: Team captains will have to present the following at their check in: 2 wireless phones, 2 headlamps/flashlights, 2 reflective vests, 2 “Caution: Racers on Road” signs for vehicles (which include Team Name and Vehicle ID (A or B)) and 2 first aid kits.
- All team members must be present and remain at the starting line until your first athlete begins.
- Each team is responsible for its own food and water throughout the entire race. Five hydration stations will only accommodate the finishing and starting athlete at each Exchange Point. PLEASE bring plenty of food and water for your entire team!
- If participants are injured during their leg of the race and are unable to continue running, the next athlete on the team roster must substitute at point of injury and complete the leg. That athlete will then complete their own leg. Team members, from there, continue in original order. If an athlete who finished another's leg is unable to begin his own leg, you may make a substitution. Please report all injuries and substitutions to Race Staff.
- If any athlete is injured on race day, while not participating, and/or is unable to participate, they are to be substituted out in the safest manner possible and all other team members continue in original order (if possible).
- Example: Vehicle B is sitting at exchange 12 (where leg 13 begins). Athlete number 1 is warming up. She sprains her ankle warming up. Athlete 12 finishes leg 12, but then Athlete 1 can’t go. Your team must decide which team member (#s 7-12 are standing there) is able to complete the leg — safely. If no one is able to do that leg you MUST skip it and drive around to do an exchange of the wristband for athlete 14 at exchange 13. Let’s say, though, that you put athlete 7 onto leg 13. He completes it. Hands off to athlete #2. You get athlete 1 (the one who sprained her ankle) back into her appropriate vehicle. You’ll also need to make a switch for that athlete on leg 25. The most important part of this rule is that you make the safest decision possible if a team member is unable to begin (or finish) their leg.
- The 24 Hours of Freedom Relay is ONLY responsible for each team’s finishing time. If your team is interested in the time of individual athletes, your team needs to track and record that time on its own. For convenience, a time sheet will be given to captains at the registration table on race day. Remember to always keep this sheet in the Active Vehicle, to accurately record times.
- ALL TEAM MEMBERS MUST CROSS THE FINISH LINE TOGETHER. Whether it is the last 10 feet or the last mile, all teammates must finish together. The official Timer will only stop the clock for a team when all members have crossed the finish line. If you are an athlete who crosses alone, you must go find your teammates and cross together to stop your official time.
- Leave No Trace - All waste must be removed from the course! Failure to comply with this simple rule will result in time penalties or disqualification from the event. Teams seen littering or athletes seen leaving garbage, clothing, water bottles or anything on the route will be disqualified.
VEHICLES
- All vehicles must display at least one “CAUTION: Racers on Road” signs through vehicle window throughout the ENTIRE race. Signs may be hand-drawn, but must be clearly visible to all traffic and include team name and vehicle ID (ie “A” or “B”).
- Teams are required to have ONLY two vehicles. Because of limited parking and exchanges, we strongly discourage the use of 12-15 passenger vehicles.
- Motor homes, campers, fifth wheels, buses or limousines are NOT allowed. Violators will be assessed a 10-hour penalty or disqualified. ABSOLUTELY NO VEHICLE PACING!
- Team vehicles MUST drive ahead to the next Exchange Point. They CANNOT trail or pace the active participant along the route. Please help us reduce Exchange Point congestion by limiting the time spent at each Exchange and especially at each Vehicle Exchange!!
ATHLETES
- Athletes MUST carry a flashlight/headlamp and wear a reflective vest during all non-daylight hours on day one and two (5:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.). Flashlights and/or headlamps must be turned ON. Any athlete without this safety equipment (in working order) will have their team penalized or disqualified.
- While on course, athletes MUST carry THE LEGBOOK PAGE of the leg they are on.
- Athletes are allowed a pacer on foot during the dusk, dark, dawn hours: 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Pacers must also sign a waiver, carry a flashlight/headlamp and wear a reflective vest from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
- Pacers MUST sign in with the Volunteer at the exchange point so that safety staff know they are on the route. If you use a pacer you MUST stay together.
- Pacers must be in the Team Registration Database listed with the athlete in the Team Running order field.
- Athletes on backcountry legs may be asked to carry one insulating layer (long john top & bottom) and one waterproof layer (rain jacket & pants), gloves and hat. This is a safety precaution in case you become injured or ill or pinned down by weather. You do not have to wear the clothing while running. Be prepared to carry this equipment if asked by Race Staff. Failure to carry this gear will result in disqualification for your team.
- Every athlete coming into and leaving an exchange point MUST sign the Time Sheet. This includes Ultra Teams. Even if you are running two concurrent legs, you MUST stop and sign in and out. Teams who fail to sign in and/or out will be penalized 1 hour and may be liable for any expenses related to a search and rescue that was begun because of a missing signature.
- Wristbands will be worn by ALL active athletes and will be passed to the next participant at designated exchange areas. Athletes without wristbands may be assessed a time penalty or disqualified.
CUT-OFFS AND START TIMES
- For safety purposes, race management may impose one or more cut-off times along the route. Team captains will be made aware of any imposed cut-offs well before race day.
- Teams will either be given a 5am or 7am start time, depending on the team’s anticipated speed on the route. Team captains may request which wave they would like their team to start in, however the final decision is up to race management.
